Leadership and Management: An Invitation

An Invitation

Professional athletes from all leagues are invited to participate in HW Associates leadership and management forum May 22-28, 2011 in Phoenix, AZ. Contact us at info@hwassociates.us for a personal invitation.

Topic of discussion:

Executive Core Competencies - leadership at all levels.

What are executive core competencies (ECC) and how do these competencies relate to the professional athlete both on and off their playing field?

The Executive Core Competencies (ECC) are what corporations and leaders utilize to select personnel for their organization. The ECC defines the skills needed to build a corporate culture that drives for results, serves customers, and builds successful teams and coalitions within and outside the organization. The ECCs are skill sets that are required in order to become part of senior management - that dream Vice President position. The Leadership and Management Forum is designed to shorten the ladder and climb to the top. It is about how you navigate the maze of success that determines your route. Athletes can either take the back country road or simply take a straight shot up the interstate from point A to point B. It is about Choice.

Who uses ECCs?

ECCs are utilized by most major corporations in the selection, performance management, and leadership development for management and executive positions. Our forum program utilizes the complete five executive core competencies as a vehicle to further develop the athlete's current leadership abilities while translating those abilities into a non-sports work life situation.

What are the Executive Core Competencies?

ECC 1 - Leading Change
ECC 2 - Leading People
ECC 3 - Results Driven
ECC 4 - Business Acumen
ECC 5 - Building Coalitions

Each of these competencies is critical to the success of the athlete and the ability to work within their sport and away from their sport as they plan their future. Some of the capabilities taught in the leadership and management forum for the professional athlete include:

Leading Change: Creating the ability to successfully bring about strategic change, both within and outside the organization as the team works together to establish an organizational vision and to implement it in a continuously changing environment. Is this you? Are you able to bring your vision to a successful outcome?

Leading People: Inherent to this ECC is the ability to provide and inclusive workplace that fosters the development of others, facilitates cooperation and teamwork, and the support of constructive conflict resolution. Which segments of this qualification are you currently performing? Are you able to successfully negotiate a resolution to an issue? Or do you simply give in to keep the peace? How does this affect your vision of your corporate future?

Results Driven: Are you able to make decisions that produce high-quality results over the long haul? Are you able to apply technical knowledge, analyze problems, and calculate risks associated with each action taken as you build your corporate vision? Are you able to creatively take an idea and build it into a multimillion dollar corporation? Do you like working for yourself? Or do you live in your comfort zones?

Business Acumen: Look around you. Do you understand what it takes to manage human capital? Can you pick apart a proforma statement and justify expenditures? Can you create a large scale budget for your business or understand the tax laws applicable to your business? Do you understand the impact of technology upon the work place? Are you able to manage human, financial, and information technology resources strategically?

Building Coalitions: How often have you read about a government or business that suffers from conflict both internally and with external organizations - conflict that negatively affects the corporate brand? In order to build coalitions groups and individual leaders must work towards a common vision. This ECC involves the ability to build coalitions internally, with the federal agencies, state and local governments, nonprofit and private sector organizations, foreign governments, or international organizations. It is about the common goals - successful coalitions require you to agree with the vision and obtain buy in from others. Are you able to understand the large and small picture as you politic your way through a situation?

If you answered no to even one question - the Leadership and Management forum will provide you with the insight to successfully create a new set of skills that will catapult you into a higher level of career success both in the sports arena and away from your chosen sport. Are you ready to reach for exponential success?
